Description
Toll Collectors
Original: 1913, Oil on Canvas
Russell’s use of vibrant colors and dramatic lighting are exemplified within many of his later career works. The late afternoon light illuminates the two central figures, while the shadowed foreground serves to intensify the meeting between the two. Here, the Native American is demanding a toll, in beef, to let the cattlemen take their herd to grazing lands on Native American territory. After finishing a count of cattle, the final terms are about to be negotiated.
