Description

Lewis and Clark Among the Nez Perce: Strangers in the land of the Nimiipuu Allen V. Pinkham and Steven R. Evans Foreword by Frederick E. Hoxie Lewis and Clark traveled from St. Charles, Missouri, to the Pacific Ocean and back again, between May 14, 1804, and September 23, 1806. They traveled 7,689 miles altogether. They encountered more than 50 Indian tribes along the way. Most of their encounters were necessarily brief. They were in a hurry. In fact, they were on a mission. They seldom spent more than a couple of days with any given tribe, sometimes to the consternation of tribal leaders, who were eager to learn what they could of the strangers and extend them proper hospitality.
