Keeoma

Original: 1898, Oil on Canvas

With Russell’s fame also came the unfortunate proliferation of myths surrounding his life.  Legend states that Keeoma, the daughter of an influential Blood leader, was courted by Russell during his extended time with the tribe in southern Alberta.  In reality, Russell spent most of his time in the 1888 “batching” it in a cabin with fellow cowboys from Montana over a single summer.  Although he frequently visited neighboring Native American camps, there is no evidence of a romantic relationship.
