A breed that came and went long before Charlie arrived in Montana, the free trapper was a true symbol of the Montana west. He knew the high country in the landscape as well as anyone and his toughness and skill kept him alive in situations that would have been the end of almost anyone else. Charlie was best friends of many of this subject’s followers, one of which was Jake Hoover, his first teacher in the ways of the plainsman.

Free Trapper

Original: 1911, Oil on Canvas

A breed that came and went long before Charlie arrived in Montana, the free trapper was a true symbol of the Montana west. He knew the high country in the landscape as well as anyone and his toughness and skill kept him alive in situations that would have been the end of almost anyone else. Charlie was best friends of many of this subject’s followers, one of which was Jake Hoover, his first teacher in the ways of the plainsman.

The setting of the sun along the jagged mountain peaks signals the day’s end but also the end of the free trappers era.  The man – wearing a capote, with high-topped moccasins, fur cam, and armed with a flintlock and powder horn – will soon be replaced by company men for the Hudson’s Ban and American Fur companies, whose heyday will also be short-lived.
