During the late 1800s and early 1900s, photography was a relatively new form of art medium and was primarily used for documentation. Capturing real people and places, it became a useful tool to better understand different cultures, histories, and identities. The exhibition Capturing the West examines the ways Joseph Henry Sharp and Edward S. Curtis used photography, as both art reference and as an art form, to document the western people of Montana.
