Lot 9—OLAF C. SELTZER—Indian War Party (ca. 1925-1930)
As was the case for C.M. Russell, Olaf Seltzer’s works often reference rela- tively remote Montana locations that can still be identified today. A September 2018 article in Western Art Collector Magazine explores a number of such sites on and around various trails leading to Indian Hill. One such site relative to the piece at hand is situated in the vicinity of Jake Hoover’s cabin, where Charlie lived as a teenager in the foothills above the legendary Judith Basin in the early 1880s.
In the particular case of Seltzer’s Indian War Party, the configuration of the trail being followed by several braves bears a striking resemblance to one depicted by C.M. Russell in There May Be Danger Ahead. As described in the Western Art Collector article, this trail leads south from Jake Hoover’s cabin to a location called Sam’s Notch.15
