175CHARLES FRITZWhen the Sun Sets as a Red Shield oil32 x 38 inches$18,000–24,000It was a winter painting trip along the Tongue River in southeastern Montana when this gift of nature presented itself. After painting on a distant outcrop through the afternoon, I was still a half mile from the truck as the January night was closing in. e low, setting sun was lighting up the sky in pinks, oranges, and purples, o ering a spectacular close to this winter day. Putting my easel down, I just stood there in the quiet to admire the immensity of the landscape and the sky above it. It occurred to me how the Cheyennes, who lived and roamed on this very spot, would also have been in awe of the night like this.Charles Fritz
