Lot 4 features another well-known figure from the history of the American West, Jim Bridger. An Army scout, mountain man, and guide, Bridger was an early 19th century contemporary of Jedediah Smith. With a fascinating biography filled with adventure, Bridger is remembered for his significant strides in the exploration of the West. He is among the first European-Americans to have witnessed the natural wonders of Yellowstone. As seen here, Jim Bridger is also celebrated as having been the first U.S. citizen to lay eyes upon the Great Salt Lake in modern day Utah. Having travelled down the Bear River in a bull boat to this remarkable inland body of salt water, Bridger initially questioned if he had arrived at an arm of the Pacific Ocean.
