CHARLES SCHATZLEIN Portrait of a Warrior watercolor
13 1⁄2 x 10 1⁄2
$2,000–4,000
Brian Dippie writes, “Charles Schatzlein, owner of the Schatzlein Paint Company in Butte, specialized in house paints, wallpaper, picture framing, and original art. He was Russell’s first professional dealer. Besides supplying Charlie with artist’s materials, encouragement and counsel, Schatzein was his most effective agent in the 1890s.” (Dippie, Word Painter, p 35)
Beyond his representing Russell and other artists, Charles Schatzlein was an artist himself. In a Smithsonian Institution Bicentennial inventory of notable early (pre-1914) Montana artists, Schatzlein and his work would be remembered alongside C.M. Russell, O.C. Seltzer, E.S. Paxson, and
others. Even during his lifetime, Schatzlein held good artistic company. In an illustrated letter from Russell to Schatzlein dated July 9, 1910, Charlie invites “Dutch” to Lake McDonald:
“Hellow Dutch how are you
we expect to go to the lake about the 15th
an we want you and your wife to com up
be shure to bring your paint box
I expect [Phillip] Goodwin soon
an if you come we will shure do some painting...”
