ACE POWELL (1912–1978) Lake McDonald Splendor
oil
44 x 89 inches
$5,000–7,500
An impressive 44 by 89 inches in size, Lot 120 is likely the largest painting ever created by Asa “Ace” Powell. This ambitious oil on panel depicts a lake and landscape that have inspired generations of visitors and artists alike. It was in this magical setting that Charles and Nancy Russell chose to build their famed Bull Head Lodge retreat. According to a February 5, 2013, article in the Kalispell, Montana, newspaper, the Daily Interlake, a young couple from Cincinnati met the Montana artist and commissioned the piece in 1962 during a trip to Glacier National Park. The piece was eventually gifted to the Glacier National Park Conservancy, the official philanthropic partner of Glacier National Park. Lake McDonald Splendor is now being offered for sale with proceeds to be used for projects in the park.
