CHARLES M. RUSSELL (1864–1926) Do I Look Like A Piker, 1904
watercolor
7 1⁄2 x 5 1⁄2 inches
$25,000–35,000
Recorded in Charles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonné: CR.UNL.174
In 1904, Charles Russell visited New York and met explorer Charles Wellington Furlong who had just returned from the Sahara Desert. Russell was inquisitive about Furlong’s travels and was likely inspired to create this watercolor. Its tongue-in-cheek depiction of Russell himself as a wealthy sheik traveling the desert is re ective of the artist’s sense of humor, which is also seen in lot 196.
