For more than three months in 1877, Joseph, chief of the Nez Perce led 300 of his people toward the Canadian border, covering a distance of more than 1000 miles as they outmaneuvered and battled 2000 pursuing U.S. soldiers. Finally, on October 5, due to his people’s freezing and starving condition, he was forced to surrender to General Nelson Miles in the Bear Paw mountains of northern Montana, declaring, “Hear me my chiefs: My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will ght no more forever.”
