A copy of a letter signed by F.G. Renner dated July 7, 1971, accompanies this lot. is letter on F. G. (Frederic) Renner’s “ e Old Bookaroos” letterhead reads in part:
In my judgement, there is no question whatever but that this watercolor was executed by Charles Marion Russell. Everything about this watercolor, including the bu alo skeleton and the rattlesnake in the lower right corner is characteristic of Russell’s early work. Even the signature, limited to the initials, C M R in the lower right corner, rather than in the lower left is typical of Russell’s rst paintings. In my opinion the watercolor was executed not later than 1882 and possibly as early as 1880. As such, it is one of the half-dozen earliest known examples of the work of this artist, after he reached Montana.
