Russell: A Catalogue Raisonné, this painting is an early example of the subject as painted in watercolor on paper by Russell. e cowboy depicted is likely Chiles Carr, a friend of the artist who owned a cattle ranch in Judith Basin. Carr was killed in a fall from his horse in 1889.
