Often following routes blazed by earlier emigrants, the Mormon Trail stretched nearly 1,400 miles across prairies, sagebrush ats, and mountain barriers, past Chimney Rock and Fort Laramie, across the Sweetwater, over South Pass, and nally through Echo Canyon in Utah territory to the Great Salt Lake From 1846 to 1869 this road carried 60,000 Latter-Day Saints westward to a new beginning.
