GERARD CURTIS DELANO (1891–1972) e Victors, n.d.
Delano’s e Victors exhibits size, a powerful and colorful presence, and obvious human exuberance. Many of this artist’s ne works tend to be tranquil scenes of Native American life and culture versus threatening images. However, e Victors embodies unusual action that appears to be coming right o the canvas, capturing the exultation of Indians, probably after a successful battle.
Typical of Delano, factual details are intentionally unstated. He generally avoids references to any speci c historical event. us the viewer must ful ll with imagination whether the armed encounter involved an enemy tribe or white immigrants. Delano gives his full attention to the image’s design, the colorful accoutrements, and a highly coordinated composition of horses, riders and dogs. In this sense, Delano has created what can be viewed as an artistic Native American counterpart in oil to Remington’s cowboys in bronze depicted in Coming through the Rye.
