2016 Heritage Award Recipient Art HistoryLarry Len Peterson, M.D. e C.M. Russell Museum is pleased to honor Larry Len Peterson, M.D., with the 2016 C.M. Russell Museum Heritage Award in art history, which recognizes signi cant contributions in interpreting and documenting the legacy, culture, life, and country of Charles M. Russell’s West.Born in Plentywood, Montana, Peterson is past chairman of the National Advisory Board to the C.M. Russell Museum. He is an avid art collector and has made major charitable contributions to several institutions throughout the West. He graduated from Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland; completed an internal medicine internship, a residency in the visual eld of dermatology, and a NIH research fellowship; and published in numerous scienti c and medical periodicals, includingthe prestigious e Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and e Journal of Clinical Investigation. He is the recipient of two Western Student Research Awards (American Medical Association, 1978 and 1980), the Henry W. Stelwagon Award (College of Physicians of Philadelphia, 1982), the Bill Reed Traveling Fellowship to London (American Academy ofDermatology, 1983), the Nelson Paul Anderson Essay Contest Winner (Paci c Dermatology Association, Inc., 1984), and the Sommers Research Award (OHSU, 1984).Peterson has published in many periodicals on art and art history of the American West, including Russell’s West and Montana: e Magazine of Western History. He has lectured at the Prix de West in Oklahoma City; the Charles M. Russell Educational Symposium in Great Falls; Montana’s Charlie Russell Symposium at the Montana Historical Society, Helena, which celebrated the sesquicentennial of the society’s founding; and Glacier National Park.His distinguished books include Charles M. He is the recipient of two Western Heritage Awards for best art book, the Scriver Award, the High Plains Book Award for best art and photography book, and the Will Rogers Gold Medallion Award for best photographic essay. Peterson currently lives with his wife LeAnne on e Spirit of Winter Ranch near Sisters, Oregon.
