216JIM CARSON Over the Bitterroots oil40 x 62 inches$22,000–26,000In July, 1805, the Corps of Discovery had exhausted the possibility of continuing their journey to the Pacific by water. They had to cross the formidable Bitterroot mountain range, and they needed horses to accomplish the task. Sacajawea, born a Shoshone, was able to negotiate this from Shoshone in the area. It would take the expedition eleven days to cross the mountains and finally arrive exhausted and half starved at the Clearwater River, which would take them to the Columbia and on to the Pacific.—Jim Carson
