Russell Catalogue Raisonné Receives Award

GREAT FALLS, MTCharles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonné has been named as this year’s Outstanding Art Book by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, located in Oklahoma City.

After 10 years of research, coordination, and preparation, Charles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonné was unveiled during a special premiere celebration last fall. The book is a collaborative project by the C.M. Russell Museum and the Charles M. Russell Center for the Study of Art of the American West at the University of Oklahoma. A catalogue raisonné is a book of “all the works” by an artist. It is usually written by the leading experts of the artist’s work, and contains photographs and provenance (where the work has been) of the works discussed.

The Outstanding Art Book award was presented along with other awards at the 47th annual Western Heritage Awards ceremony, held April 12th in Oklahoma City. C.M. Russell Museum CEO Anne Morand and representatives from the Museum’s Board of Directors and National Advisory Board were in attendance. Catalogue raisonné editor Byron Price accepted the award. Other award winners include cowboy poet Red Steagall for his original composition The Ballad of Dawson Le Gate. Steagall recently attended the 40th annual C.M. Russell Auction, where he performed at the Chuckwagon Brunch.

First presented in 1961, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Western Heritage Awards were established to honor and encourage the legacy of those whose works in literature, music, film, and television reflect the significant stories of the American West. The awards program also recognizes inductees into the prestigious Hall of Great Westerners and the Hall of Great Western Performers as well as the recipient of the Chester A. Reynolds Memorial Award, named in honor of the Museum’s founder. Each honoree receives a Wrangler, an impressive bronze sculpture of a cowboy on horseback.

Charles M. Russell: A Catalogue Raisonné is available for purchase at the C.M. Russell Museum Shop. Cost of the book is $125 for the trade edition or $500 for the leather-bound limited edition. In addition, an on-line component to the catalogue raisonné is available to those who purchase the book.
